JAMES MAY, composer
commissions
I would be thrilled to work with you on a commission! Check out some thoughts below, and then contact me to start the conversation!
Rates
Rates are negotiated between myself and the commissioner, and are very flexible.
Ensemble size/instrumentation, timeline, and scope of project will all affect the fee,
as well as the capabilities of the commissioner (that is, if you're interested but unsure about your own budget, contact me anyway and we'll find a solution!).
Collaborative Commissions/Consortiums
An easy way to offset the burden of a full commission is to start a collaborative commission or consortium. This is simply a model where multiple people, ensembles, or performers contribute to the total cost of commission. If this is something you're interested in I'm happy to chat, and to help find other co-commissioners!
Timelines
Timelines and deadlines will be determined when we chat—keep in mind that if you're interested in a work for a specific event, the earlier you contact the better.
Style and Aesthetics
If I'm lucky enough to write a commissioned work for you, I'll want to collaborate in a way that lets both you and me grow. I'm also extremely into experimentation, extended technique, improvisation, physical movement and theatricality, electronics, etc. If you've never attempted something like that before but are interested, please let me know and I would love to talk through some possibilities.
Residencies/Workshops
I also love working with performers, whether professional, amateur, or student—I remember opportunities I had as a student to work with professional composers on their pieces, and they had a huge impact on me. I'm happy to do residencies, workshops (extended technique, improvisation), Skype rehearsals, masterclasses, etc. as part of the commission agreement. I just ask that you provide travel, accommodation, and a small honorarium, all of which we can discuss.
